Finding the Yoga
In the spring of 2002 while working as a personal trainer in New York City, I decided to stop into a yoga class to get a “quick stretch” before my cardio and weight lifting regimen. What I got was a literal life altering experience. After one hour of being led through movements that my body had never experienced before, I felt alive in a way I had never felt before. Although I didn’t really understand what had just happened I knew that I wanted more.
I took what turned out to be a three year break from lifting weights and rigorous exercises and enrolled in a yoga teacher-training program. Over the next six months I listening to my teachers’ instructions as I transitioned from one pose to the next on my mat, my body gracefully transforming itself as psychic blockages and emotional baggage began to release its hold on my life. I was letting go of the past, taking responsibility for the present, and creating the future- All through the transformative power of intentional practice. I was truly in my body, aware of the unique experience of life for the first time. Since that amazing summer of 2002 I have dedicated my time to the studies of yoga, yogic philosophy, bodywork, and the art of self-healing.

Underneath the Mystery - A Simple Physiology of yoga
It is easy to see why maintaining a “beginner’s mind” is so es
ssential when exploring the depths of this 3000-year-old practice. The understanding of one principle leads to another question, another exploration, and so on. Thus far in my journey to uncover the mysteries of the practice and get down to science, this is the way I see it: The body is a vast system of integrated, specialized cells, regulated by organic fluids, chemicals and pressure. Our conscious and unconscious consumption of toxins, both physical and emotional, causes inefficiencies in these internal systems. Yoga is a powerful tool to bring balance back into these systems. Physiologically speaking, Yoga is a strategically integrated use of breath, skeletal alignment, and muscular activity that when properly practiced can create pressure in any given space of the internal body resulting in the release of physical tension, toxins, stifling emotional blockages as well as structural realignment.
The specificity of this practice is phenomenal, however this ability takes time to develop and is based on the individual’s communicative relationship with his or her own body. Based on the fundamentals of Hatha Flow, my classes are designed as safe, playfully guided opportunities for students to explore and understand how their bodies uniquely function in the context of organic movement. This allows time for self- observation and acknowledgement of misalignments, both physical and spiritual, and innate understanding of their reversal. In the beginning ( as well as throughout one’s practice) a little extra help can accelerate this process. This is where the bodywork comes into play.

A Little Extra Help Goes a Long Way
The bodywork is a series of assisted stretches in which an appropriate amount of pressure is applied to areas of the body in need of release. Using the universal principles of alignment and hands-on assists (not much different than a gentle yoga assist), the recipient and practitioner work together to alleviate tension in muscles and connective tissue. It’s like having a full yoga class performed on your body! It’s also great for seasoned yogis who need a little TLC! J

Yoga For Dudes That Lift
Guys, I know how good it feels to be in the peak of a mass building or strength training cycle. We’re PUMPED with power, able to satisfy our ravenous appetites with pretty much anything we choose, and that temporary Iron-man look is nothing compared to the inflation of our egos. Come on now, we all know that no matter how good it feels to be Mr. Universe, our massive muscles take away much of our range of motion. Participating in activities that our workouts are supposed to enhance becomes more challenging and the strength we’ve worked so hard to gain is blocked by our inability to move with grace and efficiency. Integrating yoga into your weight lifting and fitness regimen will increase your awareness of alignment and range of motion making your workouts more specific while providing a perfect balance between muscle mass and tone. Besides, you thought you were a super hero in the gym? Your potential is limitless when you focus your energies into developing a personal yoga practice! Namaste Fellas! I’ll see YOU on the mat!
